Career Fair for Bay Area Military Veterans

Swords to Plowshares, a local veteran service agency, is hosting its third annual Veteran Career Fair. The Career Fair is free and open to any veteran who would like to learn more about training programs and job opportunities in the Bay Area.

"Veterans often have a difficult time transitioning the skills they learned while serving in the military into civilian jobs. At Swords to Plowshares we help veterans pursue job training programs, develop career goals and link them with local employers," said Dave Lopez, Director of Employment and Training at Swords to Plowshares.

In addition to job placement, Swords to Plowshares offers a variety of job training programs throughout the Bay Area at no cost to veterans. Recently, the community-based group was awarded more than one million dollars in funding to expand its employment and training programs to local veterans. Career Fair attendees can learn more about pursuing specialized job training programs in high-growth, high-wage industries, such as the clean energy sector.

Aug 31, 2010: The L.A. Skate Film Festival at Downtown Independent Theater

The 1st Annual LA Skate Film Festival is kicking off tomorrow Tuesday August 31st, at the Downtown Independent Theater. Showings are starting at 2pm with the screenings of Santa Monica’s ZJ Boarding House video “ZVD” and New York skateboard documentary “Deathbowl to Downtown”.

The L.A. Skate Film Festival is the event the skateboard world has been waiting for. It will showcase a unique selection of the best skateboard movies since 2009, made by the widest range of filmmakers from all around the world. The films have been carefully reviewed and nominated by the Academy of Skateboard Filmmakers, whose members include Stacy Peralta, C.R. Stecyk, Grant Brittain, Fred Mortagne, Bryce Kanights, Ed Templeton, Ricki Bedenbaugh, Greg Hunt, Jamie Thomas, Ty Evans, and Geoff Rowley.

The theater will be screening the nominated skateboard films all afternoon on the 31st of August and 1st of September. An awards ceremony announcing the winning films will be held at The Music Box on September 2nd, 2010.

The LA Skate Film festival is also offering a couple panel discussions to all young local filmmakers as well as media and skateboarding brands. Experts in the field will be talking about 3D and Visual Effects Integration in Skateboard Filmmaking. The panels will be moderated by Steve Luther, Brand Marketing Manager at Converse and Greg Hunt, skateboard filmmaker/photographer. The panel will be held at the Downtown Independent Theater on Wednesday September 1st from 10am to 12pm. Entry is free to this event.

Screenings begin at 2pm on 08/31 and 09/01. Tickets are $12 per showing.
Panel Discussions on 3D and Visual Effects Integration in Skateboard Filmmaking will be held on September 1st from 10am-12pm. Free Entry.
