Griffith Park: free and cheap

Griffith Park is one of the largest city parks in the world, and it has miles of hiking trails. All the parking is free, as are many of the activities you can engage in there: hike, bike, jog, watch stars, play soccer, or have a picnic. Other services may have a small fee such as attending the world famous Los Angeles Zoo or playing golf or tennis. There's a Merry-go-round, which may involve an admission charge. The baseball diamond may at least require an advance reservation.

Note that the rangers have lately become even more unkind about giving out parking tickets on Vermont and presumably Western. Those two roads are closed at sunset, and cars might even be towed. So, if you park there make sure and finish your hike before the sun goes down. Alternatively, start hiking from the other side of the park (Riverside Dr./Crystal Springs Dr.) That side is only closed around 10pm.

The Angeles Chapter of the Sierra Club (angeles.sierraclub.org) conducts free hikes from the Merry-go-round parking lot each Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. There are six levels, from very easy and slow flat-ground walking to strenuous trail jogging.
